Phishing is defined by the Financial Services Technology Consortium (FSTC) as a broadly launched social engineering attack in which an electronic identity is misrepresented in an attempt to trick individuals into revealing personal credentials that can be used fraudulently against them.
Phishing typically involves some combination of spoofed email and/or Web pages in an attempt to deceive unwitting individuals, and harvest their personal information.
Someone intent on committing fraud will publish a Web page or Web site that attempts to mimic the site of a legitimate company, or use a URL or Domain Name that appears to be that of a legitimate business. For example, they may use a common misspelling of the company's name or may add a word, symbol or number before or after the name.
